Jureepan "Ying" Prathep - A French painter in Thailand

Jureepan "Ying" Prathep - Passionate Thai artist

Jureepan "Ying" Prathep

The artist's life: Jureepan Prathep, known as "Ying", was born in March 1975 in Bangkok. As she came from a military family with three brothers and a father in the Royal Thai Army, her future had been planned - Ying was going to be the first family's woman to serve the country in the military.

However, her rebellious nature and her passion for art led her to another destiny. She attended Pochang, an art school in Bangkok, which was not as easy as one might imagine. Money was tight and, unlike most of her friends, she had to work hard to purchase materials to practice her craft. in spite of few starting delays, due to the lack of money, she finally completed her studies and received her diploma in 2000.

Ying tried to make a living selling some of her works, Chinese ink drawings on glass, but as with many other artists, her lack of business acumen meant she could not keep going. When she arrived in Phuket in 2003, she was determined to renew her passion using the batik technique so popular in the province. Her husband, Lionel, promised to support her passion, but she got pregnant and she had to put her career on hold for two years.

Today Ying gets her opportunity to show her extraordinary style and passion for art in her works. These include batiks, Chinese ink drawings, paintings and jewellery designs.

The artist's statement: I realise that artistic work relaxes me and gives me back my confidence when I am feeling low. I definitely cannot call it work as it is firstly recreation. I am happy to admit that compliments and the appreciation shown by buyers makes me feel good. I will be really happy to discover one of my works of art at the other end of the world one day.
